Heinrich Böll Stiftung’s Myanmar/Burma Program seeks to contribute towards the promotion of democracy and development of a pluralistic society in Myanmar/Burma by strengthening civic initiatives, their agents and the inside perspective advocating pro-engagement.
Given the prevailing complex political, social and humanitarian situation the Heinrich Böll Stiftung has established a program which is based on the following three pillars:
»Scholarship Program & Alumni Network
»Artists’ Exchange Program
»Dialogue towards reconciliation and democratization
The Scholarship Program is the central part of our Myanmar/Burma program and has been very successful over the past six years. It contributes to bridge the huge gap in the area of education inside Myanmar/Burma and to counter the massive brain drain, one of the major obstacles for the future development of Myanmar/Burma. Each year the Heinrich Böll Stiftung awards up to six scholarships to young men and women from all parts of Myanmar/Burma for MA programmes with three Universities in Thailand.
Our scholarship program helps to build the intellectual capacity of a small but growing number of Burmese civil society actors.
After their graduation the young scholars return to Myanmar/Burma and use their expertise and knowledge in such practical fields as journalism, capacity building, community development, humanitarian work, etc. The scholarship program also produces a strong alumni network which helps to sustain information exchange among its graduates and the foundation and fosters a sense of social solidarity and intellectual affinity.
Myanmar/Burmese artists are supported to participate in international art events to showcase their artwork, develop their creative potential, gain professional experiences and form new networks with artists abroad. Artist from around the world are supported to participate in art events inside Myanmar/Burma, sharing their knowledge and bringing their views and ideas, thus stimulating the local art scene which, until recently, had to deal with decades of isolation.

The Heinrich Böll Stiftung encourages a dialogue towards reconciliation and democratization in order to exchange different views and opinions, given the polarized national and international discourses around Myanmar/Burma politics. It organizes and supports policy and public educational events such as seminars, conferences, round tables in Europe and Southeast Asia, integrating voices and perspectives from within Myanmar/Burma.
