The Heinrich Böll Stiftung (hbs) Southeast Asia Regional Office, Thailand would like to invite candidates from Myanmar/Burma to apply for its Scholarship Program for Master of Arts Studies at Universities in Thailand. A maximum of six scholarships are available for the academic year 2012 for following fulltime international M.A. programs:
- Master of Arts in Economics (International Program), Thammasat University in Bangkok, Faculty of Economics (2 academic years), download application form here (application deadline 6.01.2012)
- Master of Arts in International Development Studies (MAIDS), Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Faculty of Political Science (1 academic year), download application form here (application deadline March 2012)
- Master of Arts in Sustainable Development, Chiang Mai University, at the Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development (RCSD), Faculty of Social Sciences (2 academic years), download application form here (application deadline 31.01.2012)
Preconditions to be eligible for the Scholarship Program:
1. All applicants with a bachelor’s degree in all disciplines are eligible to apply for the scholarship (applicants for the Economics program should have a strong background in Mathematics and Statistics and preferably a BA in Economics).
2. Applicants must live in Myanmar/Burma and willing and likely to return to Myanmar/Burma after their graduation.
3. Candidates must prove a very good spoken and written command of English, according to the required TOEFL and IELTS score of the respective University.
4. Scholarship recipients are required to maintain student status throughout the period of the Program. They should devote themselves fulltime and with ambition to the study and abide by all terms and conditions outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding signed by an hbs representative and the scholarship recipient.
5. Hbs gives priority to applicants with relevant working experience and social commitment.
6. Hbs pays particular attention to have a balanced participation of women and men in the Scholarship Program and invites applicants from all ethnic groups.
The Scholarship Program is designed to provide sufficient financial support to students who are enrolled in one of the M.A academic programs as mentioned above. The objective of the program is to assist students in developing their academic and personal skills as well as their perspective on regional politics as well as concepts of development and sustainability.
The scholarship covers following expenditures:
1. Tuition & Registration fees
2. Traveling costs:
2.1 Round trip to/from Myanmar/Burma to Thailand
2.2 Traveling costs for fieldtrip for data collection (if necessary)
3. Monthly allowance: for food, accommodation etc.
4. Book and thesis allowance
5. Health insurance
Application procedure step by step:
1. The official application form and all needed documents must be submitted directly to the respective University program until the deadline (see below the contact address of the relevant University).
It is NOT necessary to send the application documents to the Heinrich Böll Stiftung!
2. The University will only accept complete applications! Please check carefully! If you expect some documents to be available only after application deadline please tell the University in advance!
3. Indicate in the application (application form) to the University that you seek a scholarship from Heinrich Böll Stiftung.
4. For questions concerning the application process please contact the respective University (program officer) directly.
5. Only candidates with sufficient academic qualifications and proven English skills will be admitted to the University. Only those application documents of applicants who have been admitted to the program will be forwarded to hbs to be considered for the Scholarship Program.
6. Hbs and the respective Universities select together the final candidates for the scholarship from the short list of admitted candidates, according to the academic qualification and criteria set by hbs (see above).
7. Hbs and the respective University program may contact applicants for interviews during the selection process.
8. Decisions made are final. Only selected candidates will be contacted.
9. Applicants can re-apply for the Scholarship Program the following year.
10. Keep the receipt of your application fee as you will get it reimbursed in case you will be awarded the scholarship.

The Master of Arts in Economic (International Program)
The objective of the program is:
- To produce economics graduates equipped with economic theory and methodology sufficient to conduct research and study in economic fields at the high quality level.
- To produce economics graduates who are capable of undertaking high-level duty such as lecturers, with ability to encourage analytical thinking in students at the secondary and tertiary levels, and specialists with expertise in economic analysis and planning in public and private organizations or in their own business undertakings.
The Master of Arts in International Development Studies (MAIDS) program at the Chulalongkorn University is designed for postgraduate students, NGO workers, and international organizations employees who are interested in the field of international development. The program is multidisciplinary and integrates academic, technical, managerial, and professional training. This program is a full-time, one-year curriculum. It requires a good command of English and the knowledge of basic social science concepts.
The Master of Arts in Sustainable Development (International Program) at the Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development (RCSD), Chiang Mai University, Faculty of Social Sciences is a graduate program (M.A) for Thai and international
students, particularly from neighboring countries. The program emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to the interplay between ethnic and gender relations in resource management and sustainable development in different socio-economic, political and economic context. This program is a full-time, two-year curriculum.
